Greening Australia (WA) - Brief Overview

Greening Australia was established nationally in 1982 (The Year of the Tree) and became a federation in July 2006. With an office in every State and Territory, Greening Australia is now the largest not for profit environmental organisation in Australia.

Our mission: To engage the community in vegetation management to protect and restore the health, diversity and productivity of our unique Australian landscapes.

As a federation we address the issues affecting Australia's landscapes which are; climate change, loss of biodiversity, river quality, and degraded land.

 How we work

Greening Australia's vision is bold. Since starting out over 27 years ago planting trees our efforts are directed to projects that are transformative and enduring. As a result we are seeing positive environmental outcomes at a larger scale and closer to the scale of threat to our environment. On-ground work is underpinned by science coupled with the expertise and reputation we have built over time in environmental management as well as the management of significant government and corporate funding contracts.

Greening Australia is well positioned to tackle the range of environmental issues in urban, regional and agricultural environments. We engage with indigenous and non-indigenous people and encourage them to be part of the solution to protect our heritage, our biodiversity and natural resources. We restore and protect native vegetation so that native plants may flourish and threatened species of animals and plants may return in their numbers to populate vegetation and thrive in their new environment.

Our work has been recognized on an international scale; both by the US based leading environmental organization, The Nature Conservancy, which works to protect ecologically important lands and waters around the world for nature and people; and by UNESCO.

Examples of cooperative partnerships and programs in Western Australia include:

Gondwana Link - South Western Australia

Gondwana Link is the most ambitious environmental program in Australia. The Gondwana Link vision aims to protect, manage and restore bushland in Australia's only global biodiversity hotspot located in Western Australia. The completed link will reconnect habitat across a 1000 km long pathway, from the wet karri forests in Margaret River in the south west corner to the woodlands and mallee bordering the Nullarbor plain.

A number of community groups and major stakeholders are collaborating to achieve on-ground environmental outcomes. Their current work is focused in the area between the Fitzgerald River and Stirling Range National Parks. Five properties within this 70 km stretch have already been purchased and are being revegetated and protected. See further www.gondwanalink.org

Our work in this landscape is in part funded through our carbon offset program called ‘Breatheasy'. Greening Austalia is an accredited greenhouse gas friendly abatement provider and assists individuals and organizations to offset some of their carbon footprint through our bio sequestration program. Our program is unique in that it plants bio diverse vegetation which not only protects against bio diversity loss it also represents a low risk approach as native bush is very resilient to fire, pets etc. Further information can be found at www.breatheeasynow.com.au
